August 23 through August 29, 2022 is dedicated to recognizing health unit coordinators. Help us celebrate and recognize health unit coordinators this week! Whether you are a health unit coordinator, know someone who is, or are thinking of becoming one, next week can be the opportune time to demonstrate the importance of their work in the healthcare field.
The basic role of a health unit coordinator is to coordinate communication between staff and patients as well as ensure the organization of a health unit. A health unit coordinator is a necessary position at any health facility and can vary greatly depending on the unit and their needs. This position can be found at hospitals, long- term care facilities, medical clinics, rehab centers, and public health centers. Overall job duties can include scheduling, paperwork, transcribing physician orders, managing supplies and more. A health unit coordinator often works under the supervision of a doctor or nurse. Although a health unit coordinator is primarily a non-clinical position, knowledge of medical terminology, medical diseases, medication, and patient rights are all necessary for the position. As hospitals continue to grow and the medical field expands to accommodate ongoing health needs, health unit coordinators are a vital position to ensuring patient care. Help us take this week to recognize and thank health unit coordinators for all that they do!
