Health Numeracy

Health numeracy is another form of health literacy. Health numeracy involves understanding statistics, graphs, probabilities and numbers on health and then applying them to your health decisions. Health numeracy is used as another way to help us understand health information. By itself, health information can sometimes be confusing and difficult to understand. Without a background in math and health science, health numeracy can also be challenging to interpret. Looking at health numeracy and knowing what the different types of it are, can bring clarity to the information. Here are some examples of health numeracy:
Health numbers: Health is defined in numbers and learning what certain numbers mean can teach you a lot about your health. For example, your body mass index or BMI is calculated by using your height and weight to determine the amount of body fat you have.
Health statistic: A health statistic summarizes health information. An example of a health statistic is, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 22.7 percent of adults in the United States have reported having some form of arthritis per their doctor.
Health probability: Health probability provided health information on the likelihood of something happening. An example of a health probability is the odds of having quintuplets is one in 60 million.
