The month of July recognizes and brings awareness in the health community about juvenile arthritis. Like adults, arthritis impacts children too. Juvenile arthritis affects children by inflaming their joints and usually is referred to by arthritis. According to the National Institute of Health, nearly 300 thousand children under the age of 18 are impacted by juvenile arthritis. Arthritis can present itself with physical pain, loss of motion, swelling and/or stiffness. These areas of arthritis are often in a child’s joints, but can also be in muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments. Diagnosis of juvenile arthritis is done by a doctor or other qualified health care providers and could include a physical exam. Diagnosis can be difficult to make upon first presenting symptoms. Further testing such as gathering a family history and performing x-rays or bloodwork may also be used. Treatment for Juvenile arthritis can be a variety of methods but the most important one is for a child to remain physically active. Other forms of treatment could include certain medications.
