Grilling Safely

A summertime favorite for many people is enjoying the opportunity to grill and cook outdoors.  Summer holidays, family gatherings and get-togethers with friends as well as warm weather, spark more reasons to fire up the grill.  However, according to the National Fire Protection Association, the month of July holds the most grill fires.  Grills can be hazardous if placed too close to other objects or if handled incorrectly.  Whether you are a grill master or beginning chef, there are safety tips to be mindful of every time you grill, to avoid accidental injury.  Here are a few safety reminders for all grillers when using your grill this summer:

  • Never leave your grill unattended. Keep an ongoing careful eye on your grill and what you are cooking.
  • Children and pets should not come closer than 3 feet to the grill.
  • Clean your grill before and after use to remove fat and grease buildup.
  • Do not place your grill right next to your home or near a tree. Keep some distance between your grill and other objects.
  • If using a gas grill, check for leaks in your propane hose prior to use.
  • Wear protective equipment when grilling such as a grill mitt and an apron and utilize long handled spatulas or tongs. Have trays ready for placing your food on when cooked.
  • If using a charcoal grill, use a proper form of starting the fire. Fire starters can include a chimney starter, starter fluid or an electric charcoal starter.

Grilling is a fun way to cook, tastes delicious and allows you to be a part of the outdoors.  Stay safe this summer and remember your grilling safety rules!
