The balance between work/school and other life roles can be unique to each person. We all have demands coming from areas of work, family, school, friends, extracurricular activities and even from ourselves. How do you balance them all? Do you feel your work-life balance is off? Are there certain areas that are too demanding and are taking away from other areas? It is important to figure out your priorities before beginning to assess what to balance and how to balance it all. Once you have an order of the things that are most important to you, you can begin to evaluate how to balance your work-life. Some of the best benefits of true work-life balance are that it reduces your stress and feeling burn out. It can also help you feel some sense of control over your life and thus improve overall happiness. Having a work-life balance can actually improve performance and satisfaction in work/school, in our relationships and in our personal life.
The next step after identifying a need for a rebalance is to take some action steps. Here are a few tips for improving one’s work-life balance:
• Promote a healthy work/school environment.
• Set boundaries between work/school and your home life.
• Carve out time in your schedule for your relationships.
• Be able to say “no” instead of overcommitting.
• Make a weekly schedule of work/school/personal life.
• Take time for yourself and look after your mental health.
Achieving work-life balance can be a challenge for many and often, the need for it changes over time. Establishing good practices of work-life balance will help promote this practice over the long-term.
