There are many different types of habits and ways that they get formed in our lives. Some habits we practice to establish, while there are others that are taught to us, or are innate in us. Then there are other habits that we have, that we want to break. Habits that are bad can be challenging for us to get rid of because habits are something we are used to doing regularly. Whatever the habit is that you want to get rid of, it is helpful to first start with identifying it and what motivates you to want to complete that habit. You can then look at things that trigger you complete that habit. Once you have identified your habit and you have established your desire for change, you can focus on getting rid of it. There are many ways one can break a habit. Some ways may work for one person and not another. Often, breaking a habit is a trial and error process to find what works for you. Some ideas for breaking your habit could include asking a family member or friend to help hold you accountable. You could also replace your bad habit with a good habit. For example, every time you bite your nails, you could first relax and count to one hundred with some deep breathing. Other people find that rewarding yourself when you avoid the habit works best. Whichever method you choose, it is important to remain consistent and not give up. Remember that a habit took some time to develop in your life and it may take a good amount of time to be gone.
