Caregivers are an essential role in many people’s lives. Whether caring for a family member or friend, caregiving is provided by over 65 million adults in the United States according to the Caregiver Action Network. Caregiving is a full-time job for some and a part time job for others. It can range in responsibility depending on the person’s needs. Some responsibilities can include grocery shopping, preparing meals, bathing, dressing, going to doctor appointments, providing medications and more. Caregiving can require a lot of hours and many people are providing the caregiving by themselves. Regardless of the time spent caring for another, it can be taxing on the individual providing the care. Caregiving can impact a person’s physical and emotional health, finances, other employment and more.
If you are a family caregiver or know someone who is, the month of November is dedicated to recognizing the work of family caregivers. Because of the work they do, caregivers also need to be cared for. Here are a few suggestions on how to care for the caregiver in your life this month:
- Allow them to take time for themselves. Ask how you can provide them a break and encourage them to take one.
- Offer your help. Ask how you can support them or how you can provide assistance to them. Maybe it is running an errand or helping with a house chore.
- Provide emotional support. Be present and available for them. Check in with their well-being.
- Encourage them regularly. Let them know they are doing a great job and how important their work is.
